My deepest condolences to the entire Olds Family. I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Vicki. I was a student of hers while attending the University of Western Ontario, and took both of her math courses. As someone that always struggled with math, I failed first year calculus, and would not have been able to continue with my program unless I either completed calculus successfully or two equivalent math courses which were both taught by Professor Vicki. Hesitant to take two math courses, I enrolled into both of Professor Vicki's 1228 and 1229 math courses in order to complete the requirements of my program. At the start I had no idea how I was going to manage, but after the first class, I approached Professor Vicki and let her know how bad at math I was, and how I needed to complete both of her courses in order to graduate. Sensing my desperation, Vicki sat me down and explained to me that as long as I came to her class and put in the work, she would explain everything to me as many times as necessary until I understood it. She was not joking, for the entire year I attended her class and would get an incredible amount of help from her not only in class but during her office hours. In fact, right up until it was time to write the midterm or final exam, I would be in the hall outside her office with other students doing practice questions in order to prepare for the exam. There even was a moment during the final exam that I completely froze, and Professor Vicki came over to me and helped me work through the problem which gave me enough confidence to complete the exam. In the end, thanks to Professor Vicki, I was able to complete both of her math courses and was able to graduate. It's been a very long time since then, but I have never forgotten the kindness, empathy and patience that Professor Vicki showed towards me during this very stressful period in my life. I cannot think of a single university professor that would have taken as much time and effort like Professor Vicki did to help a single student pass a course. Looking back on it today, her level of commitment to every student she taught was incredible. I will forever be grateful to Professor Vicki for her help, and I owe my graduation and great career to her. Professor Vicki, thank-you very much for your endless help and for making such a difference in my life, may your soul rest in eternal peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Olds family at the loss of their beloved Vicky.I saw her perform many times with London Pro Musica with both Orchestra London and with London Symphonia. I spoke with her many times before and after concerts - she truly loved music and was a loyal supporter of both organizations.

I was sad to read about Vicki's passing. She was my first Master's students in Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. She was a bright, engaging and happy person. It was a pleasure working with her. She will be missed.

I want to express my sympathy to the Olds family. I recall playing with Vikki, and her siblings, as children with trips to the Ingoldsby store for candy and pop and the occasional bon fire with popcorn and marshmallows. The last time we met, she was visiting the Beese’s at the cottage next door on Canning Lake and we had coffee at my cottage. We had a lively discussion about the “Tim Horton’s coffee” phenomenon and we both agreed we did not understand the craze. She always had something interesting to discuss.

I would like to light a candle in Vicki's memory. Not only was she a dedicated teacher but also an incredible course coordinator and, most importantly, a wonderful person. She was always available for discussions, willing to help, and give advice. She never stopped working even if some work was beyond her teaching duties. Before the COVID pandemic and the no-smoking policy were introduced on campus, it seemed like Vicki was working on campus almost 24 hours/7 days per week. Every time I walked in the hallway at the Department of Mathematics, I saw Vicki in her poorly lit office without windows buried in countless piles of papers. Once I asked her why did she not request a bigger office with windows and good lighting. She replied that if she were given a new office, it would be almost impossible for her to sort out and move her things there. She continued to work under her super overburdened workload, without sabbaticals, and even without proper vacations. I was always wondering how she could manage this enormous workload, also find time for her passion for music, and be so generous with people! Her soul was not just a candle but rather a flame that warmed everyone around. But she burned herself out. She sacrificed herself for teaching and helping students but could not survive in the blaze of the modern educational system. Rest in peace, Vicki. I am so sorry that you have found rest only when you are not with us anymore…

Vicki was an indispensable member of the Math department for many years as coordinator and instructor of several of our large first year Math courses. Although she did not put up with dishonesty or disrespectfulness, she was very kind to the students who most needed her help and was very generous with her time.
She had a good sense of humour and enjoyed having long conversations. Alongside her dedication to her work, she clearly valued her time with family and her music. Her summer vacations at the family cottage and at her music camp were very important to her. Whenever she had a long holiday weekend, she would go to visit her Mom and her siblings.
I offer my condolences to her family in this difficult time. She will be missed.
Sincerely,
Nicole Lemire

Vicki was a dedicated instructor and passionate colleague who I got to know while working in Exam Services at Western. She was always thinking of new ideas to help us improve our processes, and always acted with the best interests of her students and fellow instructors in mind. She was an ardent supporter of student success, and designed her courses to be challenging and more organized than any others we've seen. We were very sorry to hear this news. Rest in peace.

Dear Vicki, Lakefield Music Camp is simply never going to be the same without you. For how many years did you join my double-reed technique class? It was only for one week of the year, but your presence is in every corner of my memories - your great bear hugs and chuckling giggles, all those pub nights, and best of all, your splendid performances in music theatre productions. I hope wherever you are, someone has been able to find you a bassoonable chair. Rest in peace, dear soul, till we meet again.

Several years ago, Vicki and I served on the Pensions and Benefits Committee of the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA). This was when the late Dan Belliveau served as our committee chair, and together we developed recommendations regarding pensions and benefits, some of which were subsequently implemented at Western. More recently, Vicki served on the UWOFA Board of Directors, and was currently serving as the Secretary of our Faculty Association, and a member of the Policy and Governance Committee. Vicki’s contributions to the Faculty Association, her sincerity, collegiality and attention to details will be sorely missed.

I taught Actuarial Science 2053 at Western with Vicki for many years, although we had not taught the course together in over 15 years. I believe Vicki enjoyed teaching that course and always provided me with suggestions on how to make the course better. Whether or not I acted on her suggestions is another story. Over the past decade or so, whenever I passed by her office door in Middlesex College and saw that it was open, I would stick my head in and say hello. For those of you who knew Vicki and had visited her office, you know that there probably was only room for your head and not your body -- she did have one of the messiest offices on campus, filled with stacks of paper, old exams, and books! But it was her home away from home for many, many years. I know I will miss her. Rest in piece Vicki.

I had the privilege for a couple of years of sitting and singing right beside Vicki in the London Pro Musica choir. We often talked between and after singing. She was a good conversationalist and singer with a keen ear who would ask just the right question to help the choir leader and choir to improve particular points of the music. She was always kind to me. I shall miss her a lot. My condolences to the family.

I met Vicki 4 years ago, when I had the pleasure to work for her course. It was my very first experience as a teaching assistant. She welcomed me so warmly and showed me what it takes to be a dedicated educator. I’ll miss her humour, compassion, and kindness. The department will not be the same without her presence. My deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. May she rest in peace.

Alan and I are long time members of the NHB, and we were so shocked and sad to hear of Vicki’s passing. She was a very fine musician, a wonderful bassoon player, and always so enthusiastic about the groups she played in. We played with her in the New Horizons band for many years, and I was especially fortunate to play for several years in a wind quintet which she helped organize. We will both miss Vicki very much. Our deepest sympathies on your loss.
