Obituary of Benjamin Taylor Broydell
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Benjamin Taylor Broydell on January 5, 2025, at the age of 88. Ben was a loving husband to Joyce for 64 years. He was a loving father to Donna (predeceased) and Richard (Jackie), loving Poppy to Jennifer, Matthew, Tyler, Cody and Victoria and loving Great Poppy to Mila, Ries, Hailey and Brody. Ben is predeceased by his sisters Pearl and Nora and will be missed by his sisters Melva and Georgina. He will also be missed by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and the many friends he made along his journey.
Ben was born on June 21, 1936 in Burin, Newfoundland and this is where his career on the ships started. At the young age of 13 Ben began sailing on the fishing draggers in Newfoundland. In the early 1970’s Ben and his family came to Ontario where he began sailing on the Great Lakes. After dedication and hard work, he became Chief Engineer for Algoma. Ben retired from Algoma at the age of 65, but did not give up sailing on the great lakes. He continued sailing for several companies until he reached the age of 75. He was respected by all that new him. Ben will be deeply missed by everyone.
Cremation has taken place as per Ben’s wishes. Donations in Ben’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice or to a local humane society.
