Obituary of John William Nicholson

Bill (John William) Nicholson, April 7 1932 to Oct 23 2024, died peacefully at University Hospital in London. Doting husband to the love of his life, Mary Lou (Swim) who predeceased him in 2021 after almost 68 years of marriage. Big brother to Donald and Elizabeth ( also predeceased). Exceptionally proud father to his 3 sons Don (Sophie),Brian (Debby), and Scott (Krys). Beloved grandfather to Brent (Karine), Courtney (Taylor), Cassidy, Kimberly and great grandfather (Brooke, Grayson, Everleigh, Hudson).

Bill often reflected on his  amazing life, and after graduating from Mount Allison university, he embarked on his 34 year career with Sears Canada that took him coast to coast, from Halifax to Sydney, St John's,  Toronto, Vancouver, St Catharines, Ottawa, Guelph, and finally London. But he was so much more than his career: He was an officer in the Canadian military; he was a small aircraft pilot and had a fascination with airplanes of all kinds; he loved a wide variety of sports, to sail, to travel, to golf, curl, camp, fish, and read. But most of all, he adored his wife and family, and amassed an incredible circle of close friends all across Canada. Always described as the consummate gentleman, Bill was a mentor to many, always calm, and consistently gave sage advice and welcome perspective to others. He had a great love of Prince Edward Island where he was born (Summerside), and he and Mary Lou eventually bought a cottage on the island that became the summer nucleus for the entire family. He loved a wide variety of music genres, but always harkened back to his maritime roots. He was one of a kind, and has left an indelible imprint on everyone who knew him that will live on for generations.

Bill will be interred with Mary Lou at their family plot on PEI at a future date, where his family will celebrate their lives together.
