Obituary of Nancy Diane Sumner
1932 - 2022
It is with great sorrow that Nancy’s family announce her final chapter, Thursday morning, June 2nd at age 90, following a lengthy and courageous struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Nancy was married to Keith, her loving husband and best friend for 69 years following a courtship of 4 years. She was the loving mother to Pamela (John), Richard (Lorri), special ‘Nan’ to Shannon (Chris), Stefanie (Adam) Victoria, Brittni, and Brandon (Candace). Loving great grandmother to Ava, Finn, John, Kingston, and Miller.
Nancy was born in Toronto February 15th, 1932 to Dorothy and Harold Woolley as one of 7 children: Harry, Marie, and Douglas (all deceased), Terry Sandy and Heather. Nancy will always be remembered fondly by her many nieces and nephews.
In her youth, Nancy attended Humberside Collegiate, and Runnymede Collegiate in Toronto. Nancy and Keith started their family in Toronto, then through business, moved to Calgary and Regina, before settling in London, Ontario. London was home for 49 years, including a decade at their hobby farm, ‘Windy Hill’ and later in the community of Hazel Lanes, prior to moving to Orillia to be closer to family.
Meeting each day with love, joy, and optimism, Nancy regarded the unknown as an opportunity and an adventure, taking pleasure in lifting up the lives of others, always with a twinkle in her big blue eyes! Nancy enjoyed the many spirited times during tennis foursomes, as well with her bridge club pals, with more laughing than cards! A special tribute to Cathy and Joel Senese of London Ontario, for their loving and supportive friendship over many years.
A special interest of Nancy’s was the Children’s Health Foundation in London to which she devoted many years as a volunteer, serving a term as President of the Auxiliary. She was also an active member of the Maycourt Club of London for many years.
In the summertime, Nancy, Keith and family members shared many wonderful times at the Woolley cottage on ‘Meeko Island’ in Muskoka. Cooking on a wood stove and cleaning clothes with washboards in the early years was a challenge but Nancy’s infectious laughter saw the family through!
Later, special times were enjoyed at Keith & Nancy’s cottage in Nova Scotia: ‘Aighear’, Gaelic for Love and Happiness, as it certainly lived up to its name! Many memorable and hilarious occasions were enjoyed with family and great friends. Hal and Heather McClinton deserve special mention for bridge table antics followed by gourmet dinners.
Ah.... memories.
Nancy’s family extends special thanks to the attentive and caring staff at Leacock Care Centre, in Orillia. Instead of floral tributes, donations in Nancy’s memory to the Children’s Health Foundation, childhealth.ca or Parkinson Canada, parkinson.ca or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, 472 Richmond St., London Ontario, Tuesday June 21st at 4:00 pm. Family and friends will be greeted at St. Paul’s from 3:00 pm. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared at: woodlandcemetery.ca
